Our Story

Our History

Fort Leavenworth Credit Union, serving personnel at Fort Leavenworth and their families, was chartered on April 6, 1954 with eight members.

An organizational meeting and the first annual meeting took place in the home of two of these charter members – Lyle and Ivy McCoy – on May 17, 1954. Each member opened a $100.00 loan at an annual percentage rate of 12.0% for placement in their share accounts.

By the time the second annual meeting rolled around the following January, the credit union’s assets were at $2,000.00 – roughly the same price as a new car in 1955.

In 1956, Fort Leavenworth Credit Union was able to move operations out of the home of Board Secretary/Treasurer Lura Mark and into an office at Fort Leavenworth located below the Personnel Office. Asset size had grown to $7,000.00 – equal to about $61,000.00 at today’s value.

Over the next 50 years, the credit union moved and added offices, increased staff, expanded hours of operation, products and services – all while growing to more than $68 million in assets.

The year 2005 was a big year for the credit union’s history. We changed our name from Fort Leavenworth Credit Union to Frontier Community Credit Union and opened our field of membership to include people living or working in the surrounding communities. Finally, we opened our Eisenhower Road branch, which serves as our main office to this day.

In 2020, with the merger of RiverCities Community Credit Union, our field of membership was amended to “Membership in this Credit Union is limited to military personnel of the United States Government assigned on active duty within a 100-mile radius of Fort Leavenworth; Federal Civil Service personnel employed within a 100-mile radius of Fort Leavenworth; Retired military personnel of the United States Government and retired Federal Civil Service personnel residing within a 100-mile radius of Fort Leavenworth; persons employed by McCormick Distilling Company; and residents of or work, worship, or belong to an organization in the following Kansas Counties: Atchison, Brown, Doniphan, Douglas, Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Leavenworth, Miami, Osage, Shawnee, and Wyandotte; and members of the immediate families and organizations of all listed fields of membership.”

In 2021, we merged with Muddy River Credit Union, formerly Bradken Credit Union, and therefore took on their SEG membership of employees of Bradken Corporation.

In 2022, we changed again to add 41 new counties to, “Membership in this Credit Union is limited to military personnel of the United States Government; Federal Civil Service personnel; Retired military personnel of the United States Government and retired Federal Civil Service personnel; persons employed by McCormick Distilling Company or Bradken Corporation, and/or its’ successors; Retirees of McCormick Distilling Company or Bradken Corporation, and/or its’ successor; and residents of or work, worship or belong to an organization in the following Kansas Counties: Atchison, Brown, Doniphan, Douglas, Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Leavenworth, Miami, Osage, Shawnee, Wyandotte, Anderson, Barber, Barton, Butler, Chase, Clay, Cloud, Coffey, Cowley, Dickinson, Ellsworth, Geary, Harper, Harvey, Jewell, Kingman, Lincoln, Linn, Lyon, Marion, Marshall, McPherson, Mitchell, Morris, Nemaha, Osborne, Ottawa, Pottawatomie, Pratt, Reno, Republic, Rice, Riley, Russell, Saline, Sedgwick, Smith, Stafford, Sumner, Wabaunsee, and Washington; and Members of the immediate families and organizations of all listed fields of membership.

In 2023, we merged in Forbes Field Credit Union,  which was open to any active or retired member of the United States Armed Forces and their immediate family members residing in Shawnee, Jackson, Jefferson, Douglas, Osage, Pottawatomie, or Wabaunsee County, Kansas. Our field of membership previously included these and did not require any changes.
